Nobody has ever complimented a building's ductwork. They notice it exactly once — when the air conditioning is too loud, an outlet is in the wrong wall, or a drain gurgles at 2am. MEP is the discipline you only hear about when it's failed.
What "MEP" actually covers
Mechanical covers heating, ventilation and air conditioning — internationally, the reference standards here come from bodies like ASHRAE, whose ventilation and energy standards inform good HVAC design well beyond the US. Electrical covers power distribution, lighting and low-voltage systems. Plumbing covers water supply, drainage, and fire-fighting systems. Three disciplines, drawn separately by three different engineers, that all have to occupy the same physical building without colliding.
Why MEP is where most coordination failures actually happen
Architecture and structure get the attention because they're visible early. MEP gets designed later, often in 2D, often by teams who never see each other's drawings until site — which is exactly how a duct ends up needing to pass through a structural beam that was poured months earlier with no allowance for it.

How BIM resolves it before anyone's on site
The reason BIM matters for MEP specifically is that it lets mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural and architectural models exist as one combined, queryable model instead of five sets of drawings that only get compared by accident. What to ask your design team about MEP
- Is MEP modelled in 3D, or still drawn flat in 2D and hoped to fit?
- Has a clash detection pass actually been run between MEP and structure?
- Who signs off on ventilation and electrical load calculations, and against which standard?
Good MEP coordination is invisible by design — which is precisely why it's worth asking about before construction starts, not after the air conditioning turns out too loud to sit in the room.
